【 John Mew先生追悼文】

( 1928 – 2025 )

オーソトロピクスの創設者であるJohn Mew先生が、2025年6月、英国のご自宅である城にて、96歳でご逝去されました。謹んで哀悼の意を表し、心よりご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。

Mew先生は、「なぜ不正咬合が起こるのか」「顔はどのように成長すべきか」といった根本原因に着目し、従来の矯正学とは一線を画したオーソトロピクスの理論とバイオブロック治療の臨床を世界に向けて提唱されました。その革新的な視点は、時に激しい議論や抵抗を呼ぶこともありましたが、Mew先生は決して屈することなく、真理を追求し続け、勇気をもってその理念を世界へと伝えられました。

日本小児口腔発達学会の前身である日本予防歯科勉強会の時代から、私たちは計4度にわたりMew先生を日本にお招きし、ご講演を賜る貴重な機会に恵まれました。また、2019年には、先生の90歳の誕生日を記念してイギリスで開催されたシンポジウムに、勉強会のメンバーとともに参加し、先生のご自宅で催されたディナーパーティーにも出席させていただきました。

90歳を超えてなお世界各地を飛び回り、揺るぎない信念のもと、子どもたちの未来のためにご自身の理念を語り続けておられたお姿に、私たちはただ深く感銘を受けるばかりでした。また、常に温かい笑顔と優しさで私たちを迎えてくださった先生のお人柄には、医療人としての尊敬はもとより、一人の人間としての深い敬意と親しみを覚え、誰もが自然と心温まる思いに包まれるような素敵な方でした。

私たち日本小児口腔発達学会が掲げるスローガン「There is a reason for everything（すべてのことには理由がある）」は、まさにMew先生から直接頂いたお言葉です。先生の哲学と探求心は、今もなお私たちの活動の原点であり続けています。Mew先生の偉大なご功績に深く敬意を表するとともに、その精神を未来へと受け継いでまいります。

Tribute to Prof. John Mew

1928 - 2025

Prof. John Mew, founder of Orthotropics, passed away in June 2025 at the age of 96 at his castle home in the UK. We would like to express our deepest condolences and offer our heartfelt prayers for the repose of his soul.

Prof. Mew focused on the root causes, such as "why malocclusion occurs" and "how the face should grow," and advocated the theory of Orthotropics and clinical practice of Biobloc Therapy, which were a departure from conventional orthodontics, to the world. His revolutionary perspective sometimes provoked fierce debate and resistance, but Prof. Mew never gave in and continued to pursue the truth, courageously conveying his ideas to the world.

Since the days of the Nippon Preventive Dentistry Study Club, the predecessor of the Nippon Pediatric Development Society, we have had the valuable opportunity to invite Dr. Mew to Japan a total of 4 times and have him give lectures. In 2019, we also participated in a symposium held in the UK to celebrate his 90th birthday with members of the study group, and attended a dinner party held at his home.

We were deeply impressed by the way he, even at over 90 years old, continued to travel around the world and speak about his philosophy for the future of children with unwavering conviction. Furthermore, his personality, which always greeted us with a warm smile and kindness, made us feel not only respect for him as a medical professional, but also deep respect and familiarity as a person, and he was a wonderful person who naturally warmed everyone's hearts .

The slogan of the Nippon Pediatric Development Society, "There is a reason for everything," is a direct quote from Prof. Mew. His philosophy and spirit of inquiry remain the starting point of our activities to this day.We would like to express our deepest respect for Prof. Mew's great achievements and will carry on his spirit into the future.
